As a young boy in New Orleans, J. Pierre was fascinated by the secret society of Mardi Gras Indians. During Carnival Season his uncles would take him deep into the pockets of the city to catch a glimpse of the rivaling Downtown and Uptown Tribes’ performances. The traditional Native American ceremonial apparel, rich in colors and intricate beadwork, awed the artist.
Although the Uptown Tribe’s costumes were complete with small, sequin beads, it was the brilliant colors and large rhinestone embellishments of the Downtown Indians that truly inspired this piece.
